Chromium exhibits characteristics of a complex, brittle, semi-grey metal. Chromium metal is valued for its high corrosion resistance and hardness. When forming compounds, it showcases a diverse spectrum of robust colors. The ion of chromium creates numerous coordination compounds. Its passive form contributes to remarkable corrosion resistance, owing to the development of a thin surface oxide layer that passivates the metal when exposed to oxidizing agents. In contrast, the active form readily reacts with dilute acids to produce chromous salts. Chromium is soluble in acids, excluding nitric acid and strong alkalis, while it remains insoluble in water.
