Spherical Hf Powder Applications

  • Used as a cathode for X-ray tubes.
  • An ideal neutron absorber can serve as a control rod and protection device of the atomic reactor and can act as a rocket propellant.
  • Hafnium powder is used as an added element in heat-resistant alloys, such as tungsten, molybdenum, and hafnium tantalum.
  • Used as an additive of hydraulic oil, to prevent the volatilization of hydraulic oil during high-risk operations.

Description

Hafnium metal exists in various forms, such as powder, pellets, pieces or granules, and crystal bars. It is a shiny, silvery, and flexible metal with a solid capability to capture neutrons, making it useful for many applications. It is also resistant to corrosion and forms a tough and impenetrable oxide layer on its surface, making it ideal for high-temperature alloys and ceramics. Hafnium is chemically similar to zirconium and is found in zirconium minerals. It has a density of 13.31 g/cc, a melting point of 2,227 °C, and a vapor pressure of 10-4 Torr at 3,090 °C.

Hafnium is frequently used in control rods in nuclear reactors and submarines due to its capacity to capture neutrons. It is also utilized in semiconductor fabrication processes, integrated circuits, and superalloys combined with niobium, titanium, or tungsten. Hafnium is also used in filaments and electrodes.
