Description

Molybdenum, positioned as a transition metal on the Periodic Table, exhibits a metallic grey appearance and boasts notable physical properties. With a melting point of 2,617°C, a density of 10.2 g/cc, and a vapor pressure of 10-4 Torr at 2,117°C, Molybdenum is recognized for its robustness. Leveraging its strength and high melting point, Molybdenum is predominantly alloyed with other metals to produce corrosion-resistant materials commonly found in tools, aircraft parts, and electrical contacts. In advanced technology, Molybdenum is evaporated under vacuum conditions, contributing to the production of sophisticated displays, semiconductors, and sensors.

Molybdenum evaporation materials refer to substances composed primarily of Molybdenum used in physical vapor deposition (PVD). PVD involves the deposition of thin films or coatings onto surfaces through the vaporization and condensation of a material. Molybdenum is a refractory metal known for its high melting point, excellent thermal conductivity, and corrosion resistance.

Thermal evaporation of Molybdenum (Mo) involves achieving a deposition equilibrium vapor pressure (EVP) of 10-2 Torr, considered optimal for rapid deposition in standard-sized systems. The key factor influencing EVP is temperature, and consulting charts or references help determine the temperature required to attain the desired 10-2 Torr EVP. In the case of Molybdenum, a temperature of approximately 2,600°C is necessary for the material to achieve a vapor pressure of 10-2 Torr.

However, thermal evaporation of Molybdenum presents challenges due to the substantial power required for the material to evaporate efficiently. As a result, alternative methods such as electron beam evaporation or magnetron sputtering are recommended for successful Molybdenum deposition.
