Once referred to as columbium, Niobium is a fascinating metal with an initial grey appearance that subtly transforms into a bluish tint upon extended exposure to room-temperature air. Like its counterpart tantalum, Niobium demonstrates remarkable chemical resilience, steadfastly resisting a diverse range of chemical agents.
Reactivity: Niobium is inert to most chemicals and forms a tough oxide layer when exposed to air, making it resistant to corrosion.
Applications: Niobium is used in various industries, such as steel, ceramics, electronics, nuclear energy, and superconductor technology. It is also used in pipeline construction, superalloys for heat-resistant equipment, and as a hypoallergenic alternative to nickel in jewelry.
Steel Industry: Nearly 80% of Niobium is used in the steel industry to create high-strength, low-alloy steels, which have increased mechanical and high-temperature strength, toughness, and corrosion resistance.
Nuclear industry: Niobium has a shallow capture cross-section for thermal neutrons, making it useful in the nuclear industry
