Pure Silver Ingots from MetalsTek

Silver (Ag) is a remarkable metal with distinctive chemical and physical properties. Physically, silver is a white, soft, shiny, very ductile, and malleable metal that crystallizes in a face-centered cubic structure. It has a silvery-white appearance, a solid phase density of 10.49 g/cm³ at 20°C, and a melting point of 961.78°C. Silver is known for its exceptional conductivity; it is the best electrical conductor among all metals, even surpassing copper, and has the highest thermal conductivity of all metals. Chemically, silver is relatively unreactive; it does not react with air even when heated red-hot and forms halides with all four halogens. The most common oxidation states of silver are +1 and +2, with +3 being rarely observed. Silver’s chemical stability makes it resistant to corrosion under normal conditions.

More About Silver

  • Historical Significance: Silver has been used by humans since ancient times and is one of the first metals discovered and utilized. It has been found in royal tombs dating back to 4000 BC and has been used as money alongside gold for centuries.
  • Properties: Silver is known for its lustrous appearance, high reflectivity, malleability, and resistance to oxidation. It has the highest thermal and electrical conductivity of any metal.
  • Applications: While silver is commonly associated with jewelry, over 90% of mined silver is used in industrial applications today. It is used in making mirrors, electrical contacts, dental fillings, coins, and electroplating. In the photographic industry, silver compounds like silver nitrate are widely used.
  • Alloys: Pure silver is soft, so it is often alloyed with copper to increase hardness. Sterling silver, an alloy containing 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper, is commonly used in jewelry and tableware where appearance matters.
  • Health Effects: Silver is considered non-toxic, but some silver salts can be poisonous. It has antibacterial properties and is used in various applications for its ability to kill lower organisms effectively.
  • Abundance: Silver is relatively rare compared to other metals like carbon. It occurs in nature both uncombined and in ores like argentite and chlorargyrite. World production of silver is around 20,000 tons per year.
