Fabmate-Type E-Beam Crucibles

Overview of Fabmate-Type High-Purity Carbon Crucibles

MetalsTek Fabmate-type graphite crucible liners are manufactured from selected high-purity graphite for demanding e-beam evaporation applications. They offer good thermal stability, precision-machined dimensions, and broad material compatibility in vacuum or inert atmosphere environments. For applications where quartz or other liner materials are not suitable, graphite liners may provide a practical alternative, subject to process validation.

Key Features of Fabmate-Type Graphite Crucibles

  1. Fabmate-Type Dimensions for E-Beam Evaporation

MetalsTek Fabmate-type graphite crucibles are available in commonly used dimensions for e-beam evaporation systems. They are designed as graphite crucible liners for applications where dimensional compatibility, thermal stability, and clean evaporation performance are important.

    High-Purity Graphite Construction

Manufactured from selected high-purity graphite, these crucibles offer good thermal conductivity, high-temperature stability, and reliable performance in vacuum and inert atmosphere environments. The material is suitable for many standard evaporation processes.

    Precision Machined Geometry

Each crucible is machined according to specified dimensions, including top outer diameter, height, wall thickness, bottom profile, and wall angle. Custom dimensions can also be produced based on drawings or sample requirements.

    Optional Surface Treatment

Surface treatment or anti-oxidation coating may be available upon request for selected applications. These treatments are intended to improve surface performance or oxidation resistance under suitable operating conditions, but they should not be considered equivalent to proprietary Fabmate or Poco graphite treatments unless specifically tested and confirmed.

    Broad Evaporation Material Compatibility

Fabmate-type graphite crucibles can be used with many evaporation materials commonly handled by standard graphite crucibles, including selected metals, alloys, and compounds. Actual compatibility depends on evaporation material, temperature, vacuum level, reaction behavior, and process conditions.

Suitable for Vacuum and Inert Atmospheres

Graphite crucibles provide strong thermal stability in vacuum or inert atmospheres. Maximum working temperature depends on graphite grade, coating condition, atmosphere, heating rate, and application environment.

    Custom Manufacturing Available

In addition to standard models, MetalsTek can supply custom graphite crucibles based on drawings, reference samples, or required equipment dimensions. For critical applications, sample testing is recommended before batch use.

    Important Application Note

MetalsTek Fabmate-type graphite crucibles are not original KJL or Poco products. Product codes and dimensions should be confirmed before order. Performance may vary depending on actual process conditions, and specific chemical resistance, particle performance, or lifetime claims should be validated by customer testing.

Graphite E-Beam Crucible Fabmate

Common Causes of Crucible Breakage

Proper handling and setup are essential to extend the lifespan of Fabmate-Type crucibles. Below are common issues and solutions:

1. Incorrect Ramp/Soak Settings

E-beam evaporation recipes rely on carefully calibrated ramp/soak power levels:

  • Power Control Transition:
During deposition, power control transitions from ramp/soak settings to a PID loop, which manages the e-gun power and quartz crystal controller.

    • Erratic Power Fluctuations: If ramp2/soak2 power levels are not aligned with the required deposition power (e.g., 1 Ångström/sec), the PID loop compensates with significant power oscillations (+90% to 0%).
    • Crucible Stress: These fluctuations cause rapid liquefaction and condensation cycles, cracking the crucible.
    • Solution: Set ramp2/soak2 levels close to the deposition power level to minimize PID adjustments and prevent rapid phase changes.
2. Abrupt Power Shutdown

Improper shutdown after deposition can also damage crucibles:

  • Rapid Solidification: Turning off power abruptly or using a short ramp-down period causes the melt to solidify too quickly, stressing the crucible liner.
  • Preventive Measure: Gradually ramp down power to allow for even cooling, reducing mechanical stress.
