Vanadium, a silvery-white ductile solid, demonstrates insolubility in water and exhibits resistance to corrosion. It has good corrosion resistance and is stable against alkalis, sulfuric, and hydrochloric acids. Vanadium is more complex than most metals and steel. This element showcases characteristics of both metals and non-metals, forming diverse tough compounds. In its metallic form, vanadium is non-toxic. Unlike certain reactive and refractory metals, vanadium doesn’t undergo easy anodization. While tantalum produces superior anodic films for capacitors, vanadium doesn’t respond to typical anodizing methods despite creating a protective oxide at lower temperatures. It is oxidized in air at about 933 K (660 °C, 1220 °F), although an oxide passivation layer forms even at room temperature. It also reacts with hydrogen peroxide. When fabricating vanadium and its alloys, working below the oxide’s melting point or shielding them from oxidizing atmospheres during high-temperature applications is essential.
Vanadium has been used as a steel additive a lot.
